This image was deliberately underexposed by around 2 stops. The background is almost totally black and the foreground very dark. But the important part, the bluebell, is clear and colorful against the black ground, helping it to stand out.

In this shot the subject’s eyes are not in focus (gasp!) and it’s way too dark (tut-tut!), but it’s still a strong photo with a story to tell. It does adhere to some of the “rules” though. It has a rule of thirds-style composition, and it uses dramatic lighting and a limited depth of field to give the impression of depth.
